Wind turbines with vertical axes are starting to become more popular as a means of localized power generation, especially in new buildings. Because the shaft is vertical and the blades are arranged around the shaft, the array does not need to be placed directly in the wind like a horizontal-axis turbine. The advantage of vertical axis turbines is that they can be placed closer to the ground, making them ideal for rooftop arrays. Think of those giant blades spinning at sea, and you'll get a pretty good idea of what a horizontal wind turbine looks like. It usually faces in one direction and the blades appear as a typical windmill.
The main rotor shaft and generator are held in boxes at the top of the array, and everything sits on top of tall columns. It is suitable for places with a high wind coefficient because it is durable and able to withstand strong forces. The disadvantage of horizontal axis wind turbines is the need for heavy structures and is generally considered more prominent.

Q1: Can I install a small wind turbine on my roof?
A1: We strongly advise against installing turbines on roofs or buildings as they can only withstand weak turbulent winds. Several field trials have found that turbines installed on buildings perform poorly, producing only a fraction of the energy if installed in the right location.
Q2: Can I have a wind turbine in my backyard?
A2: Most wind turbines are not small enough to fit in a backyard - because larger size means more energy, and a single blade can be longer than a football field. And, wind power is loud enough for neighbors to complain, even if the wind farm is miles away.
Q3: Do I need a permit to install a wind turbine?
A3: The development of the first installation of any wind turbine will only be permitted if the property does not have an existing air source heat pump. Additional wind turbines or air source heat pumps within the same property require planning permission.
